U12 team shows well in Ontario By Brian McDonough The AZ Selects’ U12 AAA team headed north of the border over Halloween weekend where it participated in the Hocktoberfest tournament against teams from the U.S. and Canada. With only nine skaters, the Selects advanced to championship game of the Ontario event before falling to Niagara Falls, 3-0. “With a short bench, we discussed the need to maintain a total team effort and that they did,” said coach Dave Lyons. “Undermanned as they were, they competed in every game and impressed a lot of people,” added tournament director Brad Wilson. The Selects sported a balanced scoring attack, with Victoria Samuelsson, Lori Berger, Jenna Miller, Abbi Fitzekam, Jessica Cartwright and Jessie Carter all ringing up goals. Mackenzie Lyons and Jessica Conlon were strong on the defensive side of the puck, and goaltender Kelsey Atkinson again stood tall, notching her second tournament shutout of the year. Lyons was also impressed with first-year Select Hanna Jorlamon. “She continued to improve and gain confidence,” said the coach. “She constantly made the right play.”
SELECTS RETURN FROM SUNNY CALIFORNIA SHINING- CAPTURE SILVER AT TOURNAMENT! With a fast and furious start to the season, the U12 Selects dropped their season opener to the Lady Ducks of Anaheim 4-2. They rebounded quickly with a 5-2 defeat of the Jr. Sharks of San Jose. Next up was the LA Selects and behind the solid goaltending of new player Elizabeth Spinozzi, lost a close one 2-1 with the decider being a penalty shot. In the return match, veteran Kelsey Atkinson stood tall and notched the first shutout of the season 2-0. This set up the final contest against the Ducks and in a close game that came down to a late penalty, the Selects lost 2-1 to capture the Silver Cup. It was a fantastic effort by the entire team and a sign of good things to come!

AZ SELECTS U12 TEAM MEET WITH OLYMPIAN ANGELA RUGGIERO!

Littleton, Colorado - While participating in the 2nd annual Chill on the Hill tournament, the U12 team met with Olympian and Harvard graduate Angela Ruggiero. She told the girls that since she started her hockey career in California, that she knew exactly what it was like often being the only girl playing against the boys. There are plenty of opportunities today for girls in hockey however. She told them to set their goals high and to keep having fun. Hockey is a great way to meet lots of lifelong friends and that being a good student is most important. Graduating from Harvard ranked right up with winning the Gold Medal in Naganno. All of the girls were thoroughly impressed with her positive attitude and I don't think they will forget holding real Olympic medals for some time, at least until they have the chance to be holding their own! Keep working hard and it will happen! - Coach Rick
